The STA boys basketball team is only four games into the regular season, but they have already learned a lot about themselves. The squad, led by head coach Julius Sandi, has secured a 3-1 record through four games.
The team features several elite players, including senior forward Dwayne (DJ) Wimbley Jr. and junior guard Drake (DJ) Sandi. Wimbley Jr. is committed to play college basketball at Florida State University while Sandi is already fielding multiple Division I offers.
After cruising to a 82-22 victory over Coconut Creek in their opening game, the Raiders hit some adversity. They lost 54-60 vs St. Frances Academy (MD) and, at one point, trailed by 17 points to Alexander with multiple key players fouling out of the game.
With the deficit staring them in the face, the team responded. They rallied to defeat Alexander 76-68 and cap off an incredible comeback.
In a follow up effort this week, the Raiders hit a clutch free throw with three seconds remaining to take down a gritty Western team 58-57.
The Raiders next face Cardinal Gibbons on Tue, Dec 10 at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
