Dwain Hamilton, a former football player at St. Thomas Aquinas who graduated in 1981, attributes a lot of his success in life to the transformative experiences he had during his senior year as a Raider. Hamilton, who later earned a football scholarship to Stanford University, spoke passionately about the impact St. Thomas had on his journey, describing it as a place that instilled confidence, discipline, and a commitment to excellence.
“St. Thomas has this presence,” Hamilton recalled. “When I was younger, I remember watching their team—an army of gold helmets stepping off the bus. They were dominant, and I wanted to be a part of that.”
Despite being a standout player in his junior year, Hamilton was initially faced with skepticism about his goal to play at Stanford. However, the support he received at STA from legendary former head coach George Smith propelled him past his internal doubt. “When I told [Coach Smith] I wanted to play at Stanford, he simply said, ‘Let’s get it done,’” Hamilton shared. “About a month later, I got a call from [the head coach at Stanford], and things started falling into place.”
Hamilton, who is now a successful anesthesiologist, has emphasized that his success was not just about football but also about the life lessons he gained at STA. “The coaches and staff were deeply invested in us as individuals,” he said. “They stood behind us, pushed us through challenges, and taught us to overcome obstacles, whether on the field or in life.”
One of Hamilton’s main memories is the invaluable mentorship he received, off the field. “They didn’t just prepare us for games,” he said. “They prepared us for life. St. Thomas is about building character and creating a sense of confidence that carries you through anything.”
Reflecting on the legacy of St. Thomas Aquinas, Hamilton noted that many of his former teammates have gone on to lead successful lives. “The lessons we learned there stick with you,” he said. “It’s a special place that’s real. It’s not just about football; it’s about developing people who are prepared to face life’s challenges.”
Hamilton’s story is a powerful testament to the enduring impact here at STA. His journey from aspiring athlete to Stanford scholar is not just a tale of personal triumph but also a reflection of the school, and football program’s commitment to faith, family, tradition and excellence.
